The Library According to Mary

This blog is about my experiences in the Educational Technology Ed.D program at the University of Florida. Please feel free to contact me with questions or comments. My interests include the intersection of libraries, education, and technology and their effect on distance education. I'm also exploring the concept of multiple literacies, including how media, visual, and information literacy relate and the implications for libraries.

Foundations: The Beginning

We had our first class last night and attempted to define educational technology. What is educational technology? Both terms are broad...technology can be anything from a telephone to podcasting. My group (Dan, Baird, Johh, Bryan, and I) used a vague, all encompassing definition and here's what we came up with.
Educational Technology is the use of tools to mediate teaching and learning. We bounced around words to express how the use of tools effects teaching and learning, but decided that since technology can have both positive and negative effects on education we needed a neutral word free of postive or negative connotations.
How close did our definition come to the one presented in our text? We'll have to read and find out.
